Keeping tortoises is relatively simple and an enjoyable experience. To live a full, quality, healthy life they will require a heated area and a cooler space available. Normally this is provided by either a heat bulb or ceramic heat emmiter from above but you can also use heated rocks alongside these for under belly warmth.

Tortoises require regular amounts of calcium for efficient shell growth and organ functions. To make sure they get all that they need it's best to use a calcium and vitamin supplement along with a considerate diet.

Luckily a correct diet is easy and relatively cheap. They love dandelion leaves (not daffodil as they are poisonous to tortoises), flat British lettuce, watercress, dark greens and certain other flowers. Fruits and vegetables can also be given in small amounts.

To absorb calcium fully, tortoises need Vitamin D3 and a source of UV-B light. The common way to provide this is through a reptile tube light available in various sizes. A new way is to use T-Rex's new Solar Drops product applied direct by putting one drop per week into their mouth. However, as they can actually see better under UV light and also determine when to hibernate by the amount of daylight hours they receive, we recommend the use of lights in the long term.
