"FEEDING TIME"
Black Headed Caiques are are viewed by many multi-species breeders as their favourite parrots, and we only have one right now being hand reared by spoon in our home, around kids and the usual noises that go with a family household.
They are reasonably small, very active, inquisitive, intelligent, comical, entertaining and commonly seen as the jester of all parrots. Even at this young age they will run around the floor and chase our feet when out of their brooder and they are comical to watch. Very agile and quite unusual and entertaining behaviour for parrot chicks when they are so young. They are quite hard to come by and this is the first we have had for some time now.
It is very tame already as we handle and play with it lots aside from feeding. It is already stepping up onto our fingers with an "up" command and we get all parrots used to nibbling fingers, hands and getting facial features like lips, eyes and ears etc. We also encourage them to be handled by others so they don't get used to over bonding with one person.
It should be ready and fully weaned at around the age of 13 weeks old taking roughly 3 months from hatching before being able to eat adequately for themselves so as not to need fed by hand. It's a voracious feeder and at this young age will even call for food in its sleep whilst still full!!
It is being spoon fed which we believe makes parrots tamer than syringe feeding (taking up to 10 minutes each per feed as opposed to 30 seconds..naturally having more time spent with them).
We use Kaytee Exact hand rearing food supplemented with Birdcare Company's Formula Plus. After and during weaning we give them soaked, and dry seed along with fruits and vegetables supplemented with Daily essentials 3. Their water has added calcium (Calcivet). All utensils are sterilised at each feed and the brooder, cage and perches etc are cleaned and disinfected regularly.
You can reserve it with a deposit (non-returnable in the event you later change your mind) and even pay in instalments. So popular they normally sell very fast and are generally spoken for before being weaned so don't hang around if you're after it, but obviously make sure you don't rush into buying any parrot with due thought and preparation.
Parrots are a unique pet and different entirely to cats/ dogs etc. You really cannot believe how strong the bond can be untill you've experienced it's almost like having an extra child in your home..one that acts like a playful and inquisitive three year old forever!
Living for up to 30 years you could have a new best friend!
